Reasons You Should Visit a Dental Hygienist Regularly

Have you been putting off visiting your dental hygienist? You may not like going to the dentist, but if you want to keep your teeth in good condition, regular checkups with your hygienist are necessary.

Dentists recommend it

Dentists recommend visiting a dental hygienist at least twice per year. A dental hygienist will make sure your teeth and gums are clean and healthy, and the visit will only take about an hour of your time. A dental hygienist can spot problems early on. Early detection is important because it gives you more time to plan for treatment options before the problem becomes too severe or irreversible. Dentists also recommend visiting a dental hygienist if you have sensitive teeth, have had surgery on your mouth or jaw, or have orthodontic appliances like braces or retainers.

Does your dentist still clean your teeth?

Dentists are not the only people qualified to clean teeth. The dental hygienists at your dentist’s office can also do the job. These dental professionals have completed the necessary training and are able to provide you with many of the same services as your dentist, including teeth cleaning and x-rays. If you want to save money or just feel like visiting someone other than your dentist, call your local dental hygienist for an appointment.

Prevention is cheaper than treatment

There are several reasons why visiting a dental hygienist regularly is important. One reason is that most people don’t brush their teeth properly, and by going to the dentist every six months you can have your teeth cleaned thoroughly. Another reason is that it’s cheaper to prevent problems than to treat them. If you wait until something goes wrong with your mouth before you try to fix it, it will be more expensive in the long run.

While regular visits to your hygienist may seem expensive, you can offset those costs by making wise dental hygiene choices. For example, most people don’t need to visit a dentist for routine cleanings until their teeth are already decaying. By visiting a hygienist regularly—every three or four months—you’ll catch problems early and save yourself hundreds of dollars in dental work down the road. In fact, by cutting back on your visits and not cleaning your teeth regularly, you may spend more money than if you just stuck with an annual checkup with your hygienist every year. Not only that but going longer between cleanings also increases your chances of getting gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
