Cosmetics for sunbathing – which ones to choose?

It takes approx. 4 minutes to read this article

Tanning is not always safe for our skin. But there are ways to make it less embarrassing. Check out the well-known and popular sun care products, which you should pack in your travel cosmetics bag.

What kind of tanning cosmetics do drugstores offer?

On drugstore shelves you’ll find many tanning cosmetics, varying in composition and application method. Among them are:

  • sun lotions – the most popular preparations, in semi-liquid form, which are quickly absorbed into the skin and also have a moisturizing and nourishing effect;
  • tanning lotions – often used by women due to their slightly heavier consistency. They have more lipids in the composition and are often waterproof, so they are chosen by ladies who like not only sunbathing;
  • lip balm – can be easily applied, also on the way to work, and is suitable for protecting lips from UV radiation and excessive drying;
  • sunscreen sprays – these are new to the market and ensure easy application without getting your hands dirty, are quickly absorbed into the skin and are practically invisible.

You can also choose cosmetics with a chemical filter that protects the skin from absorbing UV rays. What is important, they do not leave white streaks and are easily absorbed. Allergy sufferers react badly to chemical filters, so a much safer form of protection from the sun are organic and mineral sunscreens, which reflect the sun’s rays.

Mineral sunscreen, on the other hand, is the safest for the skin and is especially recommended for children or people with very sensitive skin. It is also suitable for allergy sufferers and people suffering from atopic dermatitis. They are slightly more expensive, but much less harmful.

How to choose the right sunscreen for your skin?

On every product that’s designed to protect your skin from the sun’s rays, you’ll see the SPF, or Sun Protection Factor. The higher the SPF, the better the protection from UVA and UVB rays will be.

Cosmetics with SPF can be divided into:

  • cosmetics with low protection against the sun – SPF 2-6,
  • cosmetics with low protection – SPF 8-12,
  • cosmetics with medium protection – SPF 15-25,
  • cosmetics with high protection – SPF 30-50,
  • cosmetics for people sensitive to sunlight – SPF over 50.

For people who have a dark and tanned complexion, a filter from 8 to 25 SPF is sufficient.

For people with light and very light complexion, who have a large number of pigmented lesions on the body, cosmetics with high and very high sunscreen – from 30 to 50 SPF or more are recommended. Children under 6 years of age should be protected by sunscreen cosmetics with an SPF not lower than 40.

If you want to avoid photo-aging of the skin, use a higher sunscreen for the face all year round, regardless of the weather. UVA rays cause the skin to dry out and UVB rays cause color changes that can turn into melanomas over time

It is important to protect your face from the sun because it is your face that is most exposed to the sun all year round. In drugstores you can also buy very good quality foundations enriched with a UV filter to protect your skin from the sun.

When going for a sunbathing trip, it is also a good idea to protect your hair, which also gets very dry when exposed to the sun. A sunscreen mist will make your hair bouncy and moisturized.

Choosing a sun care product is not enough if you don’t know how to use it properly. The product should be stored at a temperature not higher than 25 degrees. It should be applied to the entire skin surface before going out in the sun. It only works for 1.5 hours and after that time you need to repeat this step to ensure a good sun protection.

Why invest in a good quality sunscreen?

According to a study conducted on cancer patients, using sunscreens of 15 SPF and higher reduces the risk of melanoma by up to 33%. The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Melanoma is much more common in people who not only did not use sunscreen, but also did not consult a dermatologist.

In addition to sunscreens, it is advisable to use airy clothes made of linen when sunbathing. Do not forget to wear a head covering.
