Trying to have a baby is undoubtedly one of the most important periods in life. It is a very good idea to make sure that you have a good pregnancy, but how do you prepare for it properly and is it even possible? It is a good idea to make sure that you have a good pregnancy and that you are aware of what you are doing.

You may find that there are different opinions on how to prepare for pregnancy. Some gynaecologists believe that it is enough to take folic acid, others recommend a number of tests. So how should you approach the subject? You can find out what you can do when trying to have a baby if you want to prepare for pregnancy

Folic acid – is it really that important?

So let’s start with folic acid, because it’s the one most often recommended for women trying for a baby. And for good reason, as it is indeed extremely important. Why? First of all, folic acid is essential for proper fetal development, and folic acid deficiencies can cause severe defects. The biggest threat is “neural tube defects” i.e. spina bifida and cerebral bifida, and in extreme cases the threat is a brainless fetus. It is therefore worth starting to take folic acid at least six months before the planned pregnancy, in the dose of 0.4 mg

What doctors to visit if you are trying for a baby?

If you’re planning a pregnancy, it’s a good idea to make a few visits to different doctors’ offices. The first of course is the gynecological one. Among other things, it is worth having tests such as cytology and mammography done. This is extremely important because pregnancy can contribute to faster development of cervical cancer and breast cancer. You should also have an ultrasound of your reproductive organs. It is very often the case that women have problems getting pregnant because of endometriosis or polyps, and both of these can be ruled out with an ultrasound.

It is also advisable to go for a thyroid examination. A woman planning a pregnancy and in the first trimester should have a TSH of no more than 2.5, so it is a good idea to check your hormones before getting pregnant. Remember also that proper thyroid function and possible hormone supplementation improves the baby’s development and reduces the risk of pregnancy complications or miscarriage.

While this recommendation may seem unusual, when planning a pregnancy, it is also a good idea to make a follow-up visit to your dentist. This is an extremely important visit because untreated tooth decay can cause pregnancy complications. In addition, tooth decay is a contagious disease.

Ovulation tests

When trying to have a baby, it is also a good idea to get ovulation tests. This will help you know exactly when you are ovulating and therefore when you can get pregnant. How exactly do these tests work? They detect a lutropin level at or above 25-30 mIU/ml. This is when ovulation begins and the likelihood of egg fertilization is greatest.
